LIF Metal Key Recycling Program

How many keys do you have in your pocket?
Five, six, ...more? Do you know which key fits what lock? If you are like most Americans you carry between 10 -12 keys in your pocket or purse.
That is a lot of metal to tote around, especially if the keys are no longer used. And what about all those keys in the bottom of the drawer?

We have the perfect answer, donate them to your LIF!.
We have begun a recycling program for all brass, steel, and, tin, & aluminum keys. By recycling these metals additional funds can be raised to operate services to the hearing & visually impaired in Illinois. Two such programs are the Infant Vision Screenings and Infant Hearing Screenings. These two services in particular serve a highly vulnerable population of youth that often cannot afford screenings, eyewear, or hearing devices. It is critical to reach these children during their formative years to protect their hearing and vision so they develop the neccessary skills for use in school and at home.

How to Collect Keys for Recycling

Prepare a container by creating a slot in the top of the container. Keep in mind that keys doo get heavy so cardboard containers are often to weak. We suggest plastic milk jugs, plastic buckets, coffee cans, or other similar containers. Attach a label with the name of the Lion, Lioness, or Leo Club, and contact info of a member to replace the collection container when full.. That member should also be prepared to answer basic questions about the type of keys accepted.

Locations for key collection containers are up to the clubs. We suggest high traffic areas such as the post office, local hardware store, or shopping center make excellent locations.

Community schools are also an opportunity for students to practice recycling. Key collection is an easy to organize "Green" project for any youth group - scouts, baseball team, soccer team, youth choir, etc. Perhaps a collection campaign near Valentines Day, each student brings in keys to fill a bucket with the heaviest bucket(s) being the winning classroom.

When the container is full it should be picked up and replaced by your Club. The donated keys may then be given to your District Trustee for delivery to the Lions of Illinois Foundation.
